Dan teaching
Growing up in suburban Connecticut, there were not many opportunities to use Spanish.  I was fortunate to have two very important people influence me and my desire to learn and use Spanish- my older sister, Virginia, who intrigued me with her tales of life in South America, and my Spanish teacher, la señora Messina, who accepted nothing short of perfection in her classes.

After college, I spent a year as a volunteer in the Central American nation of Belize (formerly British Honduras).  As a result of that experience, I had the good fortune to travel to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala.  I was so fascinated by Guatemala, that I stayed for a summer to further my Spanish studies in one of the most beautiful towns in the world, Antigua, Guatemala.

Two years later, I completed a teacher's training program in Connecticut and had my first teaching job in Brooklyn, Connecticut.  My wife and I then decided to again move overseas, this time as teachers with the Uruguayan American School in Montevideo, Uruguay.  Through that experience, I was able to use my Spanish, meet wonderful new friends, and travel extensively throughout South America.

Upon my return to the United States, I decided to work as an administrator for a change, and directed the International Student Office at Berkshire Community College.  While I thoroughly enjoyed my colleagues at BCC and the fantastic international students who studied there, I missed being in the classroom.  As a teacher, I am able to help in the growth and development of others in a way that administrators do not (when has anyone ever asked you, "Who was your favorite administrator?").

After six years at BCC, I decided to return to teaching, and found my current position at Monument Mountain Regional High School.  Monument Mountain is a great place to teach, and a great place to learn.  We have an outstanding faculty who care, and very impressive students.  You should visit us some time.

One of my life goals is to travel to every Spanish-speaking country of the world.  Places left to visit:  Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela, and Chile.  I also hope to pass this wanderlust on to my three wonderful children.
