The Stockbridge
Plain School Newspaper is an interest based
student project. There are 200 fourth and fifth grade students who will
have the opportunity to participate and submit works for publishing. Some
of the students are interested in photojournalism, some enjoy writing lead
and feature articles. Other students want to report on events and classes
at the Plain School. Interviews with new students and teachers are also
planned. We hope to showcase art work, too, by using our scanner. Along
with the actual writing of the paper, there is another element that the
students can involve themselves with, and that is the web publishing facet
of the project. The most exciting part of this project for me is that the
students will own this newspaper, and it will reflect their interests and
concerns. It is my hope that this will be an ongoing enrichment project
that the fourth and fifth grade students will continue to develop and expand
as the years go on.

| We recently invited
local professionals from the field of newspaper publishing into the fifth
grades to introduce the students to the this dynamic and challenging area
of interest. The students were given the opportunity to discuss various
aspects of newspapers, and then worked on layout design for a front page.
The students in both fourth and fifth grades have been submitting works
for publication in the soon-to-be-published paper, which as of this writing
remains nameless. There is spirited balloting occuring however, and a clear
winner should be decided soon. Student editing of student work is next
on the agenda, as well as retrieving images from the digital camera and
the scanner. A few of the images captured by student photjournalists are
previewed below. |
