Second Annual Grants Competition Summaries of Approved Projects (13 Projects, 18 Teachers)

A Single Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, Bryant School, Grades K-3, Prudence Spaulding, 115 students. Use a digital camera and scanner for "first day" letters, safety buttons, field trip research, and web page postings, giving elementary students a chance to see their work electronically published.
Bringing Educational Activities to Life, Monument Mountain, Grades 9-12, Bill Mooney, 100 students. Students will use a digital camcorder to incorporate video and still clips into websites and PowerPoint presentations. Parents will be able to view class projects and other activities on the English Dept. site.
Cardiovascular Fitness Technology, Monument Mountain, Grades 9-12, Donna Sanzone, 700 students. Heart rate monitors for required cardio fitness classes to enable students to assess their own fitness level and personalize their workouts. Enhancements to previously funded P.E. website, with connections to other school departments.
IMP Goes on Tour, Monument Mountain, Grades 9-12, Pat Kujawski, Jane Stephens, Shannon White, 100 students. Student-teacher-community collaboration in Berkshire County's only Interactive Mathematics Program (IMP) via video conferencing, online video streams and chat rooms. Program integrates algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability and statistics throughout a four-year sequence with history, literature, and science. Online benefits include teacher training, student web publication of "Problem of the Week" data collection and solutions, and student interaction with local businesses.
Language Arts Links, Searles Middle School, Grade 6, Deborah Swiatek, 100 students. Develop classroom portfolio website for students to display their work, also giving parents access to the specifics of assignments. This site could lead eventually to the founding of a monthly sixth grade newspaper.
Library Web Page, Monument Mountain, Grades 9-12, Jo Ann Lancaster, 650 students Enhance high school library web page and eventually create web pages for all grade levels in the District that will be useful for students and parents alike.
Math Problem of the Month, Monument Mountain, Grades 9-12, Kathy Erickson, 650 students. Web page with monthly math problem, to be solved by students using Internet resources, peers, and teachers. Student work will be assessed and returned with comments, with some responses being posted on the website.
Middle School Enrichment, Searles Middle School, Grades 6-8, Christine Koldys, Nancy Paciencia, Deborah Rice, 350 students Create an Enrichment website, to be maintained by students, as a resource for awareness of cultural and academic opportunities. Also, entire 8th grade will be involved in community outreach program involving local WWII veterans. Oral and video interviews will be turned into a book of biographies.
Music Technology in the Elementary Classroom, Stockbridge Plain School, Grades 5-6, Zack Danziger, 200 students. Teach all students to use Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), a standard for communications between computers and musical instruments, to explore musical theory and composition; digitally archive class performances; and share performances and other content through a Plain School Music Dept. website.
New Teacher Mentoring and Training, District-Wide, Grades K-12, Rob Putnam, 200 students. Facilitate the support and mentoring of new teachers through extensive use of web cams and Internet communications.
Sixth Grade Digital Science, Searles Middle School, Grade 6, Todd Covert, 100 students, Enhance the 6th grade science curriculum by using various sources of digital input, such as a digital microscope, and create PowerPoint presentations consistent with those already established in 7th and 8th grades through prior grant.
Teaching Art through Video Imaging, Monument Mountain, Grades 9-12, Neel Webber & Linnea Macé, 200 students. Students will design, film and edit video-demonstration art workshops of student artists, teachers, and local professional artists. Digital video and still images will be copied to CD's and made available to students, faculty, community members, and college admissions departments.
Using PowerPoint to Enhance Math Lessons, Searles Middle School, Grade 7, Carole Aberdale, 100 students. Lessons will be converted to Microsoft PowerPoint, highlighting specific concepts in interesting ways for classroom TV monitor presentation, and for web access from home or school. Students will use a digital camera to capture math topics in real-life situations.
